Coronary angioplasty

Coronary angioplasty is a highly specialized procedure, dedicated to restoring the flow of the coronary arteries through certain devices. This procedure is initiated by a diagnostic cardiac catheterization with coronary angiography, which means that a thin tube will be advanced, usually through the artery of the wrist, and the staining of the coronary arteries is carried out employing a material called a count. With this, the degree of obstruction of the coronary arteries and the need for some type of treatment will be defined.

Coronary angioplasty consists of advancing thin wires called intracoronary guides (as thin as a hair) and advancing them through the coronary arteries. This guide is used as a rail to advance other devices, such as intracoronary balloons, which dilate the artery inside to make way for the blood, and coronary stents, tube-shaped metal devices that expand the artery inside and keep it that way for many years.

The main indication of this procedure is ischemic heart disease, which can manifest as chest pain (see angina pectoris), heart attack, shortness of breath, even arrhythmias, fainting, or sudden cardiac death.

This procedure is usually performed by an interventional cardiologist, who is a person with sufficient training to perform this type of intervention. It can only be performed in a hemodynamic room.
